Ypres Memorial Milestone, Royal Borough of Greenwich

Ypres Memorial Milestone, Christ Church, Shooter’s Hill, Royal Borough of Greenwich. Listed Grade II (list entry updated). © Historic England DP182715. This is an unique example of an 18th century milestone being adapted with a plaque that marks the fallen of the Ypres Salient offensive - the Third Battle of Ypres (Passchendaele). The milestone also shows how far it is to Ypres Cloth Hall, Belgium which was destroyed during the first World War. In 1922, the milestone was moved from the roadside opposite Christ Church to its current location in the churchyard. The plaque was added at that date in order to perform a commemorative function. The current plaque is a replacement for the one that was stolen.
