This memorial honours the 22,000 Royal Fusiliers who fell in the First World War. The figure was modelled on an actual soldier who fought in the war. and was deployed by Toft in two other memorials. The Royal Fusiliers were one of the capital’s main army units. This figure guards the entrance to the City of London. Albert Toft was one of the major figures of ‘New Sculpture’ - a movement that rejected Victorian stylised neo-classicism to produce work that was more naturalistic and vital.
